Courses

There are five courses incorporated in the European Union module of the Department of Political Science and International Relations: “Turkey-EU Relations”, “External Relations of the EU”. The Department of Social Work will introduce a new elective course titled “Governance of Migration: Europe and Turkey” and this course will be open to students from other departments as well.

Turkey-EU Relations course is designed to specify the main issues and problems which appear through the history of Turkey-European Union relations and attempts to analyse whether and how the EU has an impact on Turkey in terms of its political and economic problems, implementation of fundamental rights and values through using its tools of norm promotion. Using tools of norm promotion is indeed what makes the potential EU global role significant. The course is designed to be taught in the second term of each academic year, consecutively between February-May in 2021, between February-May in 2022 and between February-May in 2023. It will be taught for 15 weeks and each week consists of 3 hour long lectures. Given by Prof. Dr. Özgür Ünal – Eriş.

External Relations of the EU course focuses on the European Union’s relations with every region of the world, including the Central and Eastern European Countries, the Balkans, Asia, Africa, Latin America, United States and Turkey in particular. Main aim of this course in analysing these relationships is to try to assess norm shaping means and the resulting potential of EU’s role as a global power. The course is designed to be taught in the first term of each academic year, consecutively between September-December in 2020, between September-December in 2021 and between September-December in 2022. It will be taught for 15 weeks and each week consists of 3 hour long lectures. Given by Prof. Dr. Özgür Ünal – Eriş.

Governance of Migration: Europe and Turkey concentrates on the processes and developments of migratory movements experienced by Europe and Turkey. Whıle the first part of the course sets its focus extensively on Europe, examınıng the history of migration across the European continent, national and EU level policies, the second part turns its lens to Turkey, coverıng issues such as the history of emigration from and immigration to Turkey, undocumented immigrants, Syrian refugees in and outsıde of camps, feminization of migration and finally a close examination of Istanbul as a diverse city of destination for various immigrant groups including European expatriates. The course is designed to be taught in the first term of each academic year, consecutively between September-December in 2020, between September-December in 2021 and between September-December in 2022. SHZ 171 EU and the Developing World: Influences on the Social DomainT: his course concentrates on the ways the European Union (EU) has addressed social issues in the developing countries. The EU has a long history of development policies, humanitarian aid, and indirect funding to the countries outside of the European continent. The development policies and funding programmes of the EU are elaborated in the documents such as Policy Coherence for Development. In this course, students learn the EU organizations and branches responsible from the EU’s external relations, such as the European Union External Action Service, and the policies related to the EU’s social and public policy priorities outside of Europe. Examples will be given from the EU’s past and current relationships with the other regions, such as The African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) countries. In different weeks, discussions will be held on the EU’s influences on non-European countries’ policies on education, social services, human rights, culture, energy, food security, environmental issues… etc. The conceptualisation of concepts such as social inclusion,social innovation, marginalisation, or development will be focused. Guest speakers will be invited to share their experiences with the EU-funded and regulated programs and projects. This course was given by Assist. Prof Dr. Aslıhan Nişancı

Conceptualising the EU: This course aims to introduce the common policies of the EU and the institutional framework which are important to understand how the EU indeed functions. This information on the functioning of the EU will be given through a small introduction of the history of the European Union which will familiarise the students with main treaties, events and important personalities.
