Regarding Chancellor Scholz’s emphasis on ‘Zeitenwende’ (turning point), the research conducted by Istanbul 29 Mayıs University Department of Political Science and International Relations Faculty Member and Jean Monnet Chair Holder Prof. Özgür Ünal Eriş was published at Hürriyet Online.

By conducting detailed interviews with the journalists, 69 MPs, academics, experts and experts, including those of Turkish origin, held in Berlin in July-September 2023, she talked about what the ‘Zeitenwende policy’ means in Germany and its success so far, and also examined how this policy, which aims to focus more on defense and military issues, affects Germany-Turkey relations. And she prepared a report titled “How will the Zeitenwende affect Germany’s international role and relations with Turkey?”

Prof. Dr. Ünal Eriş recently introduced and discussed this 26-page report, which includes the findings of his interviews, with participants consisting of academics, experts and journalists at the Ankara office of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and the Consulate General of Germany in Istanbul.

The report stated that most of the experts, who defined the ‘Zeitenwende’ as increasing expenditures and investments in the military field, sending weapons to conflict zones, and eliminating energy dependence on Russia, shared the opinion that success was not achieved in this field. They also argue that this failure is due to lack of leadership and lack of communication. Recent public opinion polls have revealed that support for Scholz has hit rock bottom, and the ‘turning point’ has become almost a dream, remained a promise.
